SILVERCOM CTC MINI CLASSES SCHEDULED FOR 2017-18

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

Definition of a Mini Class:

A short class taught by a volunteer Silvercom member on a single topic, concept, or task with which the volunteer member feels competent.

When will a Mini Class be offered and how long is a Mini Class?

Suggested times to offer a Mini Class are Friday mornings or Monday evenings. The class can last for one hour to two hours.

Is there be a fee to the student for taking a Mini Class?

No fee.

How will a student register for a Mini Class?

If interested in attending, a Silvercom member will contact the presenter of the Mini Class directly by email or phone. The presenter will control the minimum and maximum number of students in his/her class.

Where will the Mini Class be held?

In the Silvercom CTC Classroom near the Activities Desk of the Center.

What materials will I need to take a Mini Class?

In the Mini Class description, each presenter will indicate what materials a student should bring to class. Either the presenter or the student will bear the cost of materials.

As Mini Classes are developed, descriptions will be added to this document and posted on the calendar.

Researching Military Records through Ancestry.com Donna Crumb

Materials Needed: Bring laptop, iPad, or tablet if possible.

Class members may use Silvercom’s Ancestry program during the Mini Class.

Description:

Overview of where U.S. military records reside, what data is available, how to access that data as easily as possible, and hands-on research on a person in the armed services with the goal(s) of accumulating data regarding one’s ancestors/family members in the military and/or creating a request for (1) official military records and (2) replacement of lost/stolen official military insignia/awards.

Guide to Keeping Your PC Running Smoothly (Hopefully) Vail Williams

Materials Needed: Bring your laptop if you have one. Mini Class is pertinent to laptops only.

Minimum of 5 students; maximum of 12 students.

Control Panel (backup and restore, recovery, security, and maintenance).

DNA Testing Donna Crumb

Materials Needed: Please bring notebook and pen or pencil.

Class Description: Learn the basics of DNA testing and how you can use the test results. Learn how your DNA is compared to DNA from another person. View actual DNA test results from several different companies. Compare major DNA testing resources used for the class, as well as other resources to use to learn how to delve more deeply into DNA test comparisons.
